12"x12" Acrylic, Paper & Graphite on Birch Board (Framed in a Hardwood Floater)
I painted this while re-learning composition. I had not been paying attention to composition at all. I was in a free fall of continuous thought without bringing much sense to the table. I was creating depth but there was no structure. Then, I put down this large red shape. Like a mouth ready to take in anything within its path. I realized that such a powerful shape in contrast to all of the small, vibrating shapes and quiet spaces, anchored the painting. It was a lesson in utilizing scale. Sometimes when there are too many little things going on, it takes one HUGE thing to bring perspective to it all as a whole.
